A Tribute in Music to Commemorate 9/11

As the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, people across the globe are looking for ways to connect and commemorate. Not only will some share in moments of silence, but also in prayer and in remembrance. Others, still, may find solace in music and in song.

For those looking to commemorate 9/11 through music, platinum selling Welsh recording artist Jem has compiled an album in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, on behalf of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. The album entitled ‘Ten Years On – A collection of songs in remembrance of September 11th 2001’ comprises moving reflective songs by an amazing caliber of artists whose heartfelt lyrics and music will bring people together in remembrance on this monumental day.

Jem was inspired to create something special and memorable for the families and to connect all worldwide on this landmark anniversary because of her personal connection to the day. In turn raising awareness and funds for the valuable work fulfilled by the 9/11 Memorial.

The artists have all kindly donated their songs along with acclaimed California based Japanese photographer Hiroshi Watanabe who donated the cover photograph, ‘Ellis Island 2, New York’, a print of which resides in the permanent collection at Houston's Museum of Modern Art.

The album is released on September 1st 2011, on iTunes, Amazon MP3 and the www.tenyearsonalbum.com website.

Thank you for your support,

Team Jem :)

Watch Jem's submission for the "Crash the Superbowl" competition, the winning commercial gets shown during the Superbowl 2010!! The brief - to come up with & direct a 30 sec commercial for Doritos. Jem decided to purposely keep it low-budget / home video style and had lots of fun making it.

Click on the link below, wait for the page to load and then click "skip intro" bottom right, and the video will come up. Help spread the word by embedding from the site / tweeting / blogging on your facebook & myspace etc! Lets get the "hits" on the video up for the judges to see! Any positive comments would also be MUCH APPRECIATED, you have to register to comment but you only have to give your name, email & age.

It has become a little controversial as you'll see by some of the comments, Jem posted one early on as some people had started taking it way too seriously :

"Come on ladies, where's your sense of humor? I made this commercial and I'm a girl! I hope that puts a new spin on it as we had a right laugh making it and are all friends and family. It's silly and fun, like it or hate it, I hope you can watch and take it in the spirit it was made, it is certainly not meant to offend :) "

...or are they perhaps competitors, you never know..!

THANK YOU ALL from Jem & her Wonderful Web Team

P.S. No girls were hurt in the filming of this commercial ;)

NEW SONG - COLDPLAY ‘YELLOW’ COVER!

Monday February 9th 2009

That’s right folks. I recently recorded a cover of Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ for a Starbucks Valentines Day Compilation out now in the US. It’s in all the stores and on itunes too so check it out if you fancy hearing my slower stripped down version.
I am really happy with how it turned out, very beautiful methinks. I produced the song and enlisted the great talents of Jeff Atmajian on piano. (Jeff informed me during the process that I could give Streisand a run for her money with all my notes, I took that as a compliment..!)

Hope you like!
Jem x

P.S. I will find out if and when it is going to be released worldwide but in the meantime maybe it'll end up on youtube for all to see/hear :)

RADIO 2 INTERVIEWS

Hi all, just got back from a wicked and crazy promo tour in Europe where I did many many interviews, and lots of singing (as you can hear from the state of my voice), and a slamming DJ set at my album launch party, lots of fun! Here are two of the Radio 2 interviews that are still archived at the mo :

One is with the lovely Zoe Ball (Mrs Fatboy Slim for those of you who aren’t in the UK and aware of her super talents), who I haven’t seen for SO long. Not since a party on a rooftop in Miami back in 2002 I think, which was actually the week KCRW starting playing my first ever demo in LA! She is standing in for Dermot O’Leary :

(Think it’s around 2hrs 10minutes)

The other is with Steve Wright avec my Mum who loved every minute outside the booth!

(Click on “Tuesday” on the middle right side of the page. The interview is around 2hrs35mins in).

Hope you’re all doing great!

GLASS PEAR ON GREY'S ANATOMY :)

Thursday Jan 15th '09

Just a quickie to let you know my brothers wicked wicked wicked band 'Glass Pear' have one of their super duper songs featured in Grey's Anatomy tonight, January 15th!

I think it's 'Last Day of your Life' which is tres beautiful. You can also check the music out on itunes (search Glass Pear), and www.myspace.com/glasspear, they are all fantastically catchy melodic brilliantly sculpted heart felt songs!

For those of you who might not know, my brother Justin (Yestyn in Welsh), co-wrote '24' and 'Missing You' with me on my first album, and 'Down To Earth', 'You Will Make It', and 'How Would You Like It' on the new one.

Some of the new tracks he's been sending recently are insanely good, one is as if he's channeled the late great Jeff Buckley and that's saying something. I am so proud! One of my favorites on the itunes EP is 'Wild Place' which I put on my Imeem playlist (check out www.imeem.com/jem).

Anyway, if you're watching listen out in the show, and on itunes you'll see a rather sultry picture of him on a London underground (subway) platform!
I'll be there soon!
Thanks for reading and have a GREAT day!
Jem x

JEM RELEASES WITH DRAMATICO RECORDS

On 2nd February 2009, Jem will be making a welcome return to Europe with a brand new single and album on the same day.

Jem joins Katie Melua and the first lady of France Carla Bruni, along with label-owner-maestro Mike Batt as label mates. She comments “I was so impressed with Dramatico and their set up, they had me at hello!” adding "I am thrilled to be working with music-loving, enthusiastic, intelligent, passionate, humorous, lovely people who thankfully possess the essential ingredient of having 'balls', what more could an artist ask for?"

The album’s release date is also a special one as Jem’s Welsh grandfather, her ‘Dadcu’, passed in July, and would have turned ninety-three on February 2nd next year. “It is so lovely and auspicious that the album is going to be released on his Birthday. There are no coincidences you know”. The album is dedicated to him and her three other grandparents.

Jem can’t wait for her UK and European fans to finally hear the new album. "Down to Earth is different from Finally Woken in a good way. As before, I mix up genres as I like listening to lots of different types of music so that's what comes out. It is a little darker in parts and then a little lighter too, as is life."

Jem’s new album ‘Down to Earth’, available on Dramatico Records/ATO 2nd February 2009.

WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME PEOPLE!
The new site is finally up and the new album is FINALLY OUT!!!

I’m writing to you from my studio in LA, looking at two framed vinyl records that started everything off — ‘Pinky & Perky - Have a Party’ which I sampled for the title track of my first album ‘Finally Woken’ and ‘Les Swingle Singers - Jazz Sebastien Bach’ a record from 1967, which I sampled for my first single ‘They’. I also have a framed poster of my EP ‘It All Starts Here…’ which is one of my favorite pieces of artwork. It’s a photograph of my sister Chloe, happily swinging around as a young girl, set against a beautiful backdrop of red—y/orange. The title of which becomes relevant again and again as life continues in motion…

So I hope you’re enjoying the new album, I’m so glad it’s finally out!

(As some of you might know from my blog — HELLO, HELLO, HELLO!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! — it was actually due out last year but ended up ‘frozen’ for quite a while).(more...)

September 02:

If you tuned into see the Gossip Girl season premiere yesterday - you heard "Crazy" from Jem's new album Down to Earth, coming September 16.

"Crazy" is NOW available on Itunes HERE

August 2008

Jem highly anticipated sophmore album, Down to Earth is coming September 16. The first single off the album "It's Amazing" was featured in the film Sex and the City and the official soundtrack.

The single can be purchased now on iTunes by clicking HERE

Jem co-wrote Down To Earth with cohorts old and new including hip-hop producer Jeff Bass, one of the two brothers credited with discovering Eminem, and producer Lester Mendez (Shakira, Santana and Nelly Furtado). The album reflects Jem's far-ranging influences including Brazilian percussion on the title track, Detroit Gospel choirs, a Stevie Wonder inspired 'Crazy' complete with funky banjo, and the tempestuous Latin-flavored track "I Want You To..." a collaboration originally earmarked for a solo album by turntable whiz Cut Chemist (Ozomatli, Jurassic 5).

On the blistering dance-pop tune "Aciiid!" Jem worked with Greg Kurstin (Kylie Minogue, Beck, The Bird And The Bee) and sings in Japanese, where she enlisted the help of two Japanese-American music fans to tutor her in the phonetic pronunciation. The album also includes a moving collaboration with South African singer-songwriter and poet-activist Vusi Mahlasela on the track "You Will Make It" recalling 9/11, and dealing with the suffering of loss.

Track listing for Jem's Down To Earth:
1) down to earth
2) crazy
3) I want you to...
4) it's amazing
5) keep on walking
6) you will make it
7) i always knew
